If they desperately wanted people of colour taking center stage... Why couldn't they have made Lord of the Rings but set in a different cultural mythology? Plenty or movies have been handled that way in the past and nobody had any reason to object. Think of Akira Kurosawas film Yojimbo. It's the same story as the Spaghetti Western "A Fistful of Dollars". And also the same premise as "Last Man Standing". The only difference being that Yojimbo is set in feudal Japan, A Fistful of Dollars is set in the wild west, and Last Man Standing is set during the Prohibition era. All three films are good. All three films feel original, even though they ate based on the same story and premise. So for LotR, they could've done something like a setting inspired by Tribal African mythology. Same story, same premise, but different settings and characters. I would've given it a chance even if I'd recognized their PC reasoning for choosing the setting. Ancient african tribes have a rich mythological culture that is way too ignored and overlooked by Hollywood, so if anything it would've come across as something new and fresh to a wide audience. But of course, that would be the intelligent approach. And we all know that lefty activists in the industry are only focused on destroying and altering the white man's culture in their political turf war.
