Call me strange but... Even as a kid, I thought comic book super heroes were mostly cringe. I can distinctly remember the few I thought were interesting: Todd McFarlanes Spawn and The Punisher.

@_V.Va_ I don't think that was my reason though. The reason I had against them was because they all just seemed to be tailormade to function as power fantasies for bullied nerds. Not that I'd want to deprive them of it. It's just that I think you can do more varied and interesting things with the comic book medium. And I suppose that's why stories like Spawn and The Punisher just appealed to me more. Neither of them were "heroes", nor even people you wish you'd want to be. I mean one is a resurrected corpse sent back from hell to cause as much carnage as possible. He has to constantly suppress a deep desire for revenge, and he lives in rodent infested allies with only homeless hobos and alcoholics to keep him company. Even has to sleep in dumpsters in a writhing mass of earth worms to regain the magical energies that keeps him going. The other had his family murdered, and currently lives in a utility room in the subway, with a crapton of guns and and equally strong desire for revenge as the former character. It's interesting to explore. What keeps these characters going. How will their motives and methods impact other people. Not just the "bad guys" they're after, but everyone caught in the crossfire. Will the find some sort of redemption or peace of mind in the end? These stories are far more appealing to me than stories about some OP dude wearing his underpants on the outside, flying around and picking up school buses from falling off cliffs or bridges.

@wondering141 I'm not sure I looked up to them. I mostly felt sympathy towards them. Even though both had some serious capabilities and powers of sorts, they came across as underdogs in really shitty situations that they had to deal with. I never wanted to "be" them. But I wanted to know what happens to them.
