"My own gut reaction..." What kind of historian uses his gut reaction as evidence? :S

@jonny46ba I'd love to see a historical film about nazis directed by Mel Gibson. XD

@hanyu_dada : They sailed back because there was nothing there worth their time. The northern parts of North America where they landed is pretty much identical in climate, plantlife and fauna to Scandinavia. Norsemen were on the lookout for places with arrable farmlands, not endless pine and spruce forests where you can't grow crops, which they already had plenty of at home.

Might I nominate "I, Claudius" the BBC television series from the 1970's?

It's surprising how many uses of urine medieval people discovered. From dye fixative to leather curing agent to laundry detergent (if you leave urine to sit outside for a few weeks it will leave behind ammonia, which is useful for washing fabric)

Norsemen have often been portrayed as brutish barbarians in fiction and even by contemporary historians. But what many people forget is that Odin, The Allfather and king of the gods in the Norsemens pantheon was considered the god of wisdom and cunning. Norsemen valued wisdom and knowledge as much as they valued strength and being able to take charge. Thor might be prominent, but Odin was still the king.

Doesn't sound very smart to steal money out of the cash room. If you intend to launder money, you'd ADD money to the cash room. Money which you've acquired through illegal means that is. When doing so, mixing the illegally gained money with the cash that patrons of the casino, you'd create "false" profits. All taxed and perfectly legal afterwards. Or rather, the IRS wouldn't be able to distinguish the illegal money from the legal money without having an agent counting every single deposit that patrons drop off in exchange for gambling chips.

Greedy Dutch. There are only two things I hate in this world: People intolerant of other people's cultures... AND THE DUTCH!

@williamheyman5439 Doesn't really matter if you study history or not. History will repeat itself anyway. People just are like that. They might remember the facts of history. But they forget the severity and perspective of it within a generation or two. So dwelling on history for any other purpose than entertainment or novelty is kind of pointless.

The lunacy of social contagion... Reminds me of how people were treated during the Covid 19 scare.

When Murphy hits you, he never does it once. He pummels you with everything at the same time.

Because when Master and Commander was made, adults still wrote and directed films out of Hollywood. Nowadays films are mostly written and directed by overgrown manchildren.

Yes, it was the Mayans fault they got conquered by the Spanish. For starters: The Mayans should've fought better. Second: the Mayans should've travelled the seas more, coming into contact with other cultures, refining their weapons technology through trade as well as improving their immune systems a bit. The Mayans were too insular, and that was their downfall. Similar to how the Chinese got beaten by Europeans during the Opium Wars. Despite the fact that at one point in time, China had seafaring vessels that made the European navy vessels look like primitive bark boats in comparison, but the Chinese were just too "content" with their culture and deemed exploration and seafaring to be an unimportant concern. China also invented the very gunpowder and cannons which the Europeans imported and further refined to levels that outmatched any firearms or cannons that the Chinese had in their arsenal. The lesson to learn here is: Never, EVER entertain the notion that your own civilization is "the greatest" and see it as an excuse to stop exploring and developing it further. Always strive towards preparation for the unseen enemy with a bigger stick than yours.

In terms of human deaths, Stalin was far more evil than Hitler.

Soldiers do not fight wars. Governments do. Soldiers are just doing their duty. No reason to treat an enemy combatant with disrespect, whether they lost or won. They all went to the field of battle with their very life on the line. Sadly this insight was discarded during WWII and onwards...

@leppox "Voluntarily"? My hairy balls. It was wartime. If you're an enlisted man, you can't just "leave" during a war or refuse to fight. That would be a death sentence, especially in nazi germany. Rommel along with the entire Wehrmacht didn't have much of a choice in the matter. If you want to criticize the bad guys, then go after the SS instead. They weren't even military men, but just Hitlers pet psychopaths.

It's a shame a country lures young teenagers into front line duty by calling it "the good fight" and all that. Patriotism, especially through service in the armed forces is not about heroism or "fighting the good fight". It's about doing the ugly work that has to be done to carry out the will of the state. The kind of work that most people would shy away from and the kind of work that get your friends maimed and killed. If you want to be a hero, then go be a doctor or a firefighter or something like that. Soldiers are no heroes. They're hired guns of the government. Suppliers of violence and force.

@cyco1980 Of course he's sentimental about his buddy. Human beings work like that, whether you like it or not. "Humanity" is not about "caring for your fellow man" or some bullshit like that. Actual human behaviour is about caring about those closest to us, and pretty much giving fuck all about everyone else. Naturally, in "polite conversation" nobody likes to admit it, but when push comes to shove, that's our innermost nature. And honestly, it doesn't just extend to other humans. If my pet dog and you happened to be trapped in a burning building, and I only had the time to save one of you, then I would let your ass fry without hesitation. I've got a bond towards my pet dog. I don't have a bond towards you. So if both of your lives ever hang in the balance, then the life of my dog will always weigh heavier. It's nothing personal against you. It's just that I care more about those closer to me than I care about you. Just as Joshua here cared more about his comrade in arms (a bond that's usually stronger than most people know) than he did about the scum that shot at them every day and laid explosives as traps for his friend to get killed by.

@cyco1980 Your country sound like a shithole country devoid of freedom.

Never understood why the attack on pearl harbour is a matter of "infamy" it was a strike against a legitimate military target. There's nothing "infamous" about it. It's just warfare. If one wanted to talk about infamous acts committed by the empire of japan, then Unit 731 and the sexual slavery should be the top ranking acts of infamy. Pearl harbour was just a battle, nothing more.
3
Hehe, nowadays the quote "I have a splinter" is joked about as a very minor injury usually cried over by hypocondriacs. But back then, splinters were quite serious. XD

@MarvelousSeven : I can live with Sharknado films. They are after all low-budget, indepndent and intentional b-movies. What bothers me about having 9 spiderman movies is how hugely overbudgeted they are. A sensible culture shouldn't spend that much money on b-movie material like Spiderman.
2
@oalf4869 : No one said that Japan is innocent. What we're saying is that the U.S is not some "innocent victim" because of the attack on pearl harbour. It's a bit rich when a country like the U.S chastise others for "fighting wars of aggression" and "being disruptive to peace".
2
@cyco1980 You know nothing about the real world.
2
@cyco1980 "Us"? :D Surprised that you'd actually ask seeing as how you seemed to be quite infatuated with your own damn voice, you little troll.
2
@cougar2997 : You're delusional. You don't know anything about the reality of military service. You're one of the naive, blue eyed morons who completely bought into the propaganda. Service has never been about "your fellow citizens" or "values". It's all about carrying out the will of the state. Plenty of servicemen could tell you if they were allowed to how they have been ordered to do things that not only went completely against their personal or even the national values, but even AGAINST their fellow citizens (and sometimes in direct violation of the law). Unless you're prepared to commit such actions in service of your state, then you don't belong in the armed forces at all.

The movie industry is strange. People living in the middle ages and frequently took baths and wore laundered clothes, expertly maintained by household matriarchs taught almost since childbirth to use a needle and thread... Are portrayed as caked in dirt, even in their faces which they don't even bother to wipe off, and with clothes made from burlap about to fall apart at the seams. Yet a prostitute living in abject poverty in the coal choked streets of the East End with no real place to wash up is portrayed as wearing freshly laundered clothes every single day and with impeccable grooming and hygiene. Why can't hollywood get this right?

Wait, a girl being 9 years old prevents a historical man n from having pedo-sex with them? Damn sure didn't stop the Muslims beloved "prophet" from doing it. :P
2
@nickolaso1119 : There is nothing "unprovoked" about it. Cutting off a country embroiled in a war from their supply of oil is an act of war in itself. The U.S had it coming. And as to the matter of "declaring war". It's war we're talking about. No civilization in history ever needed to "declare" their intention to go to war against another. Such formalities are both trivial and nonsensical when talking about war (the very state where all forms of civility and law gets replacef with mass scale destruction and murder until one side cries uncle). Like I said: Pearl harbour was a legitimate military target. There was nothing "infamous" about attacking it. Americans are just pissed because they weren't given "proper time" to mount a defence. Yet conpletely disregard the fact that it was hardly within the rational self interest to let them prepare. The U.S got caught with their pants down, and Americans whine and moralfag about it. That's it really.

Regarding the code of honour and treatment of the community, you have to understand that there is a significant difference between tha family branches operating in and out of America and the families originating from and operating in Sicily. Mafiosi in sicily operate almost in plain view of their biological families with the stern watch of their grandmothers and grandfathers. If they're caught terrorizing their very own civilian neighbours, they'll be disowned and ostracized. Which is why the Cosa Nostra code of honour exists and is followed by sicilian mafiosi: to garner the support of the civilian public rather than fear alone. In the U.S however, most of the italians were immigrants. At best they had their mothers and fathers with them when they arrived in the U.S, but as their mothers and fathers died, the mafiosi had almost zero familial ties to anyone in the communities which they lived in, which meant that the code of honour had little purpose when dealing with people outside of the cosa nostra.

While I did watch and enjoy the Narcos videos and such, I must admit that I find the pre-modern History Buffs episodes to be the best. Modern history just isn't as thrilling as pre-modern history.
2
@aramisaac4292 Gonna colonize us eh? With what? Your ridiculous wooden shoes? XD
2
I always found the issue of "samurai not sullying themselves with using guns"... Like did the Tanegashima Teppo escape the script writers mind completely? The Samurai overtook ALL European countries in the number of guns produced at certain points in history for fuck sake!

"Ambitious"? More like naively optimistic. XD

The first crusade began in 1095 460 years after the first christian city was overrun by muslim armies. 443 years after muslims plundered Italy. 427 years after muslim armies first laid siege to the christian capital of Constantinople. 380 years after Spain was conquered by muslim armies. 363 years after France was first attacked by muslim armies. 249 years after the capital of the christian world, Rome itself, was sacked by a muslim army. By the time the crusades finally began, muslim armies had conquered two-thirds of the christian world. The crusaders did NOTHING wrong...

@tolispoulos5398 North america where they landed didn't. At least not within easy reach of any norse settlers at the time. In case you historically illiterate self didn't notice, north scandinavian colonies tended to be located within spitting distance of the coast. Inland settlements where mostly something you'd find in Scandinavia itself but rarely for "foreign" colonies. And the only thing you'd find close to the coasts of most of north america is the identical kind of climate and natural features that you already find in Scandinavia (spruce and pine forests). What would be the point of dumping all the resources and manpower required to set up a colony that will be faced with exactly the same difficulties in farming endavours that you already have at home? The British Isles on the other hand is different, because there's far more stretchrs of nutrient rich soil and leaf forests, which is why so many norse scandinavians prefered it to invade and settle. North america however had NOTHING that norse scandinavians wouldn't find at home.
2
@tolispoulos5398 There is no historical evidence that they met "strong resistance from native inhabitants". No skeletal remains showing injuries of weapons, no mass death locations, no mention of any indians in Norse sagas or runestones and no oral traditions among native americans of any encounters with norsemen. NOTHING. Greenland at the time did not have a harsher climate than northern america. It was named GREEN-land for a reason. Climate has changed since then. Climate wasn't the issue though. Sediment was. The british isles have winters too, especially at that period of time in history. Doesn't change the fact that most of the sediment on the British isles have mlre nutrient rich soil than the nutrient deprived soil in northern scandinavia and north america.
2
@tolispoulos5398 Where is your proof of viking and native american interaction of any kind? Where are the native american oral traditions and iconography supporting your claims? Where are the norse sagas or menhirs inscribed with runes? Where is your forensic evidence? Oh, that's right! YOU HAVE NONE! You're just talking out of your ass, sperging shit that you THINK happened, which you have no historical evidence to support.
2
The film bombed because american reviewers can't stand content where there's no sucking up to american patriotism.
2
I guess Ridley Scott confused Maid Marian with Wendy Darling from Peter Pan, and the kids she's leading are The Lost Boys 😄
2
@Manek Iridius: Doesn't cut it. Show me actual proof. Show me family lineages and income levels and how they changed with a single individual and statistical surveys on who "made their own fortune" and who simply got born to someone wealthy. Unless you show me this, your entire statement is false.
2
@Manek Iridius: Seriously? That's your best counter argument? "You want proof, therefore you're worse than Hitler"? You're not the brightest bulb on the billboard are you? None of the people you mention came from impoverished families.
2
@oalf4869 : Cause americans never raped their way across any continent right? Well, except for the continent they would claim as their own that is. The native americans probably would agree.
1
@irishdragon2311 Because Stalin was a paranoid moron, who feared being subjected to a military coup by the veterans who weren't all a bunch of naive, blue-eyed party loyalists. But merely being paranoid and being a moron never stopped any dictator in history from having ambitions of conquering foreign territories.
1
@skywillfindyou So that whole Iron Curtain thing never happened? :)
1
@patrickturner6878 Source?
1
@tolispoulos5398 None of which the norse were looking for you moron. The were looking for VERDANT FARMLAND. What part of that is so hard to get through your thick skull?
1
@freshgreenjello6431 Most rich people did not "work hard" for their money. The majority of rich people are born into wealth and inherit it.
1
@stephenmason1028 : Prove it.

@vanjazed7021 Kill 1 man and you're a murderer. Kill 10 men and you're a butcher. Kill thousands of men and you're a conqueror.
