Determination is very important though. The U.S has lost a lot of wars lately due to lack of determination (Vietnam, Afghanistan etc.)

@DaSpineLessFish I'd say both, actually. An army needs a determined nation behind it. There wasn't enough national determination behind the war in Vietnam or Afghanistan, and both ended up in a loss for the U.S. It will be exceedingly difficult to win a war without determined soldiers. But the same is true for not having a determined nation, since the army depends on the nation for material support.

@TheRedandWhit Exactly. All the more reason why national leaders shouldn't go to war over vague and abstract geopolitical goals and pissing contests, but instead choose war as a last resort for situations where goals and conditions are clearly defined and which have the full support of the public.

@ungainlytitan1460 But all of this hearkens back to my point. National determination includes political support. A politician in office can completely neuter any army, no matter how well trained or well equipped by simply pulling them out of deployment. So Ukrainian troops may lack the training and the equipment. But they all know they're fighting for their countrys very existence and have the full support of both the population and government. The American troops in Vietnam and Afghanistan were not so fortunate. Both being victims of the hubris of certain presidents believing that they could wage wars without full national support.

@ungainlytitan1460 True. The last competent war and aftermath dealing the U.S did was against Japan. Turning a former enemy into a prosperous ally.

@wsm7929 Yes. Winning battles is pointless if you lose the war

@demomanchaos They lost the war by a simple metric. The stated goals of the intervention in Vietnam was to prevent the spread of communism and stopping them from coming to power. Yet in the end, the communists did come to power, and have been in power ever since.
