If you make a weaker tank look like a tiger, isn't that a small strategic benefit? It might fool enemy recon and make the enemy act in a different (hopefully desirable) way.

@hewlett-b3v : Meaning they brought the shermans from elsewhere, to fight weaker tanks that weren't tigers. So that the actual tigers can be deployed in an area where the shermans are not. In strategy it's often beneficial to make the enemy think you have certain weapons in a specific location that you do not, just as it's beneficial to make the enemy think you do not have certain weapons in an area which you do.

The lady of my heart, only wears armoured skirts.

@stevenardian1485 Because they were expensive af. And annoying to maintain. Doesn't mean it's a bad tank in a fight since it had thicker armor than most of what it encountered and it could punch hard and far with it's gun. So when the enemy sees a tiger in the area of operation, it will influence their behaviour.

@Hubilicious90 Uh yes, it is a STRATEGIC benefit if you take a step back and look at it. I'm very familiar with the difference between strategy and tactics.

@Hubilicious90 I did not use "the wrong term". You made the mistake of confusing my idea with being applied to a handful of tanks. Whereas I was thinking of several divisions.

@abdullahakhtar9824 Which is what you want. You're forcing the enemy to commit materiel to which there is no net gain. Aircraft fuel is more expensive than tank diesel after all. And producing aircraft was more expensive than producing tanks.

@Hubilicious90 Exactly. It depends on which echelon makes the decision. Now tell me, which "tactical officer" has the authority to outfit an entire nations tankfleet with a particular piece of equipment? How many officers working at the operational level has such authority? It is a pretty huge expenditure after all. I'm fairly confident that the people approving budgets for such endavours operate in the strategic echelon rather than the operational or tactical levels.

@cantbanme792 That's the nature of war. Commanders have to send as many soldiers to die as is necessary to get the job done. Unwillingness to risk the lives of troops lose wars. There's nothing to "like" about it. It simply is what it is.
