Conservative family values can really be an unattractive shackle sometimes though. The way I see it, conservative family values is not merely about getting married and having kids. It's also about taking care of your elders. And in my case, being a dutiful son it has lead to some financial retardation for me. I haven't been able to get all those mandatory status symbols like a car or a house and such, because I was born into a poor family and as soon as I got my first job I had to help my parents over investing in my own future. Now many of leftwing persuasion have told me that I should just ditch them and focus on myself. But knowing that their debts might end up getting them thrown out in the street, combined with the fact that I accrued debts to my own name in order to help them out, there just hasn't been much room to turn myself into marriage material. My parents aren't irresponsible people (at least not when I was born). But they've had a lot of bad fortunes, and made mistakes in their youth which they have to pay for now and will probably have to well into their retirement. I can't just abandon them. It goes against every fibre of my being.
