The first Lovecraft story I ever read was The Colour Out Of Space. It was remarkable how he could conjure up an image of something that is genuinely undescribable. I've been hooked on Lovecraft stories ever since.

His racism was not unique or out of the ordinary during the time. In fact, such racism was common in all of academia. And despite his racist views, he was still more humane since he openly condemned the advocacy for genocide practiced by the nazis in germany.

martin corderoy : Furthermore, the eroding of standards also waters down the definition of words to the point of becoming meaningless. "Racism" is being continually expanded by the regressive left into encompassing views and behaviours that are not only benign but also extremely far removed from what the original definition of racism. Personally I don't believe this self-righteos zeal benefit any oppressed minority groups. At one point in time, racism was a cause for concern and thorough debate. Nowadays, people just shrug and ignore accusations of racism, because they are so intensly proliferated that less people find a reason to care if someone is "racist" or not. There is only one logical result of this: more cases of ACTUAL racism will go unnoticed and unadressed.

@vinny5638 "Inexolerable fallacies" is a bit of an exaggeration. You don't think that racism is bad because "science has debunked it thoroughly". You think it's bad because the nazis have left a permanent stain on racism, and the fact that it has been thoroughly driven out of acceptable conversation by ideological puritans for decades. The racist model has more merit to it than people want to admit. It's not perfect, but few models of explanation are. Psychologists have for a long time been able to determine that humans have in-group preferences and that forcing too many different ethnicities together destabilize social cohesion and trust in society. Then there's the bell curve measuring the average IQ-levels of different races, proving that there is a difference in average intelligence between the races (with asians scoring the highest, caucasians coming in at second place and black people being at the bottom). So there's more to the racist model of explanation than people would like to admit. Neither you or anyone else denounce racist beliefs out of some "scientific" sense, but because you've been thoroughly indoctrinated that even debating racism and it's potential merits would be a "slippery slope" to the third reich and the holocaust.

@vinny5638 : You misunderstand. I'm not trying to paint the people like Hitler in a prettier picture. Hitler was an amoral and unethical, genocidal asshole. What i'm saying is BECAUSE Hitler and other racist organisations like the KKK have acted upon their racist beliefs with such brutal and unethical methods as they have, the entire concept of racism (that is, the idea that humans actually CAN be subdivided into different races, and that they possess specific racial traits that differs them from one another, which is a morally and ethically neutral idea and doesn't necessarily have to manifest in KKK-lynchings or Third Reich Holocausts) the concept of racism in itself has become culturally and socially marked as "tainted", even to the point where actual scientists actively refrain from and avoid lines of inquiry that may actually prove that there are inherent biological differences between races, and that there's valuable sociological and political information to be gained from such research. Only a tiny minority of scientists dare to investigate these matters, and when they present findings that actually go against the virtue signalling, multi-cultural utopian ideals, they get their names and research dragged through the mud by the collective academia. I think, before WWII broke out, this "pariah" culture surrounding the concept of academic and morally neutral racism hadn't yet been formed, so scientists weren't as afraid of investigating racial differences between people as they are now. Granted, their standards of scientific research had about the same quality you could expect from the time period. But some of them might've actually been onto something important. Something that we will never know now, because WWII created a virtue signalling paranoia and collective scorn of ANYTHING that could be construed as even remotely "racist".

@discordian100 I can see what you mean. Lovecraft wasn't merely about crafting a narrative and story. He was very adept and creative in his use of written english as a language too. His short stories are the kind where an english student would come into contact with words for the first time that they might have to look up in a dictionary to find out the meaning of. In my opinion Lovecraft is quite overlooked as an educational author for english classes, because you want students to encounter words they've never read before so they can study them and learn more about the language.

@kevinseraphimday6373 : So what you're saying is that as long ad you believe in a fictional sky-wizard, you are somehow impervious to racist thoughts and feelings, even if you live right smack in some ethnic ghetti where you're subjected the worst aspect of particular ethnic groups on a daily basis? I doubt it. :P Some of the most racist organisations in history were firebrand Bible-thumpers after all (like the KKK)

@sid300e : His "sexual repression" wasn't "weirder" than anything else that went on in Victorian England. Most people who fancied themselves to be of good pedigree were sexually repressed at that time.
