Well, i'm an atheist who is also big on ideas of virtue. My view of it is basically this (take it or leave it): I don't feel that I need a threat of purgatory in the afterlife to motivate me to live a virtuous life. Trying to be a moral and just person who does not shirk from self-sacrifice for a worthy cause helps make my life feel meaningful. That's just how I feel on an instinctual level. I know my life will end one day. And I'd rather face oblivion knowing that people would say good things about me and keep my memory alive as a good person, rather than being forgotten as yet another egocentric and self-indulgent douchebag, or worse: as an evil person who did nothing but cause others harm. Maybe you could see it as an art project. My life is the canvas, and I want to leave a nice picture on it behind me after i'm gone. I suspect Carl is of a similar mindset. To us who do not believe in Gods, our own legacies make up our personal faith. Doing your best to be a virtuous person is the only way to improve upon that legacy.
