A one year old cow or pig is not a "baby" in their species...

It can. As with a lot of things it just has to be decentralized. A big issue with farming in a lot of countries is idiotic government regulations and big companies hogging special rights to be the only ones eligible to do certain parts of meat and dairy production. For example, over here, farmers can't even slaughter their own cattle. Regulations demans you need a bunch of permits and facilities that only big company slaughterhouses can afford. Meaning the farmers cattle has to be crammed onto trucks and transported long distances and then be mixed up with other herds of cattle, causing needless distress and suffering before they get slaughtered. A better way would be if the farmers could just pick off their own cattle at the farm, perhaps in their own pastures where they're calm and won't see or hear a speeding bullet coming their way.

@leviotten The comparison is still stupid and emotionally driven hyperbole. A human child is not sexually mature at 4.5 years of age. Chickens and cows on the other hand...

@curt3494 It's idiotic to rely on society and technology for a living.

@atishbong There is no irony in it whatsoever. A smartphone is just a toy and distraction. A pastime for the sake of mindless entertainment. I spend far more time on practicing survival skills and primitive tool making than I do with computers and smartphones.

@ephraimwinslow Well for starters, the quality of the meat gets better. Meat bathed in stress hormones for the entire duration of the animal's life develop a less pleasant taste and texture. Animals that live chill and pampered lives produce the best meat.

@Rem_NL You say that as if you can simply go to a farm and buy meat from the farmer directly. In some countries that's actually illegal. Like in mine. The farmers aren't allowed to butcher their own cattle. Only the "certified" slaughterhouses are. That's how insane and illogical centralization and regulation has become in many countries. And it's all at the cost of the welfare of the animals.
1
@ephraimwinslow It should be a luxury practice. Meat shouldn't be "affordable" to anyone.

@मृदुलशर्मा Of course there is humane killing. Also humans have killed both animals and members of their own species since they took their first steps on this planet. Stop trying to redefine what "humane" means.

@Vegan.Fairy.x What do you think amounts to a "natural lifespan" for prey animals in general? All domesticated animals in farming are descendants of prey animals, who would get eaten by predators in the wild.
1
@Vegan.Fairy.x No it's entirely relevant, because part of a "natural lifespan" for a prey animal involves getting eaten by predators. Suppose we just let the domesticated pigs out in the wild instead of humanely killing a few of them and eating them. They'd all be slaughtered within weeks because being bred in captivity means they lack the instincts and physique necessary to have a fighting chance against the predators out in the wild. So their "natural lifespan" would be cut very short. And their deaths would be agonizing because getting eaten by predators is often a brutal and drawn out affair.
