For the sake of argument, was Saruman's plan of ruling behind Sauron's throne really so doomed? After all, Sauron was once a servant of Morgoth, and subtly influenced Morgoth decisions as well. What's to say that Sauron would be immune to it? Not an endorsement of woke here, i'm just theorycrafting with Lord of the Rings lore here. š

Ā @NemisCassanderĀ I'm not saying that Saruman would be "good" or be able to turn Sauron to being "good". What i'm saying is that since Sauron himself influenced and manipulated Morgoth back in the day, Saruman could've very well been able to do the same to Sauron, even if Sarumans intentions with doing so weren't really that good.

Ā @NemisCassanderĀ The way I read Saruman was more like that he thought he'd be able to ingratiate himself with Sauron as an ally at first, and then eventually stab Sauron in the back at the right moment to claim all of Sauron's realms as his own. His attempt to persuade Gandalf was mostly just a ruse in the hope to use Gandalf as a pawn for Saruman's own ambitions. I kind of interpreted it that the Palantir had corrupted Saruman's mind to become like this, in a similar vein to how The One Ring corrupted people's hearts if they held on to the ring for too long. Saruman was probably aware that Sauron and others who had Palantirs were watching Sarumans uses of the Palantir, but what Saruman didn't anticipate was how much of a corrupting force it is to have an "all seeing eye" like a Palantir. Being able to watch all past, present and future at a whim would change you as a person and alter how you see things and think about things. Which is why Sarumans "logical course of action" appears to be madness to Gandalf.

Ā @spacejunk2186Ā And Morgoth was way more powerful than Sauron.
