  1. Chomsky, along with the producers of the text in this clip, display a very common and widespread moral tokenism here. They first provide cogent argument and copious evidence to explain that Russia's actions in Ukraine are perfectly understandable, almost obligatory if Russia were to retain its security. They then undermine those actions with the disclamatory statement that no such actions can be justified. The 'from Russia's perspective' analogy used in the clip actually recognises the real world consequences that are likely to arise from placing a powerful, sovereign nation under threat from neighbouring territory: we all know what would happen were China or Russia to do in Mexico what NATO has done in Ukraine; the reaction would come swiftly from the US, and none of it would be deemed unjustifiable. The Russians need and deserve their very own 'Monroski Doktrin'. Only then can we have peace.
