The huge problem, of which the Russians must be keenly aware, is the residual anti-Russia, anti-peace with Russia lobby that continues to assail the Western peoples daily with the narrative that Russia must be first expunged from Ukraine, and then punished. Against this background, any assurances the Trump administration might make, must be regarded as flying in the face of Western public opinion. Just two years away from the US round of Primaries, the Russians cannot be so naive as to grant Trump's word as being in any way dependable even in the medium term. Surely the Russians must know that their only option is to continue to fight hard and talk long.
