His use of the term 'far-right', very early here, doesn't bode well. Upon being asked to define the term he uses, he further fails to impress - unable to justify such a claim against the AfD. Nothing substantive is given at all, just a muddle of references to the aim to leave the EU and NATO. That's concerning.
He later describes the likely future set-up: "If there are parties like the AfD, who are outside the political system..." There it is again: it's a given that no place can be offered to those growing numbers of German people who find themselves deserted by, even sometimes assailed by both the left and by the supposed right.
Herr Munchau's wry smile at Freddie's description of Brexit, and then his correction, show him to have that situation very solidly in his grasp. Generally, he comes over as a voice very much worth listening to.
Once again, a truly great interview. Freddie Sayers really does listen and responds to points raised on the fly, with intelligent and incisive further questions.
