How on earth would the Russians have any faith in negotiations with the same people who they negotiated the Minsk agreements with, who have subsequently made it public that they were never intending to honour the agreements; they were merely buying time for the Ukrainians to amass sufficient forces to take on Russia? Western leaders have repeatedly declared that their aim is to break-up the Russian Federation by means of regime change. This makes this conflict an existential one for Russia; whereas the West can walk away to think again.
