Russophobia's main, long-term base is Britain. The British Empire demonised Russia due to a fear of its potential, given its huge territory, some of which is crucial in any exercise of power over the 'heartland' as outlined in the theories of Halford Mackinder. He is the best known of many Anglo-centric observers, who saw everything in terms of the threat to British domination. It is a commonplace to posit that British Empire as defunct and no longer a major influence on world events - the US having taken position as the new boss. This is a mistake: the power base of the US is very largely in the hands of the same people who wielded the British military in former times. This power base is the one that fought WWI and WWII when Germany was seen as the most potent threat to the Anglo-US hegemony. It is now engaged in preparing the attempt to thwart the rise of the Eurasian powers, of which Russia is a major part.
