Rounding You fail to appreciate that the basic reason for Russia's action was its concerns over the encroachment of NATO force. The stationing of US troops in Ukraine is precisely what Russia has strenuously stated, it will not accept.

Scary to think that Mr Wallace held such high position. He seems very deluded. Quite apart from the overall tendency here, to carry-on the same underestimation of Russia's capabilities that has characterised the mainstream narrative from the outset of the conflict; this discussion is glaringly devoid of any mention of what led to Russia's invasion. By this omission, the implication seems to be that Putin just fancied taking some of Ukraine's land. Why no discussion regarding the decisions made during Clinton's administration and the end pursued ever since, to weaken and dismantle the then fledgling Russian Federation? Mr Campbell might very well have had a hand in the origination of Tony Blair's one-time saw 'tough on crime - tough on the causes of crime'; well Putin's "crime" did not come out of nowhere. We need to focus on what caused Russia to act as it has done.

The US gets to have a Monroe Doctrine, by which no foreign power is allowed to site military assets in its area - meanwhile, Russia is supposed to just sit and watch NATO build its bases and missile silos right up to its border. Just compare the number of military bases the US has across the globe, with those of Russia or of China.

How do these three people just blithely trot out the "Putin invaded in 2022" line with never a mention of the thirty year scheming by the UK/US pact we call NATO, to encroach and encircle Russia with bases and missiles? More generally, their whole approach shows them to be stuck firmly in that world that is slipping away and being displaced. They are unable to deal in anything but the terms that held sway in their youth. When does the Ukraine war end? When and only when, Russia feels it has done enough to secure its future as a sovereign state relieved of the danger posed to it by NATO. If Viktor Orban were to accept your invitation he could bring you up to speed on this. Other figures could help also, such as John Mearsheimer or Jeffrey Sachs.

@finley8508 I would not have a clue how to prevent any responses to my comments. I welcome all and I'm actually disappointed that I haven't managed to elicit more. Russia of course bears responsibility for its actions. Try to imagine how the US might react were say Russia or China to set up military bases in Mexico or Canada? How would that play out do you think?

@finley8508 You seem receptive to ideas. I learned a lot from reading Jonathan Haslam's recent book regarding this situation. "Hubris" is by no means pro-Russian, but it is very informative and enlightening as to the full events that led to this situation.

@michaelmccomb2594 The bit about the Neocons. The bit about Maidan. Where?

@ronald3836 NATO membership has been the aim since the Clinton administration. Just because you say otherwise does not erase the fact.
