The language is designed carefully to hold people in fear and to modify their behaviour. It is classic cognitive manipulation. The first example was wheeled out very early in this episode: there was to be a 'new normal'. By this, we were/are urged to give up our view of this as a thing to be overcome, and to see it as something that will necessitate our living our lives from now on, in a different way. That different way turns out to have features common with communist/authoritarian states, in which individual freedom takes a back seat to the need to be subservient to the needs of the wider society. Small wonder that one of the leading figures of SAGE - the body which advises government in the UK - happens also to be a central activist in the UK Communist Party.
