The West knows that it has made a massive mistake by this stage - it needs a face-saving way out. This commando raid, and all of the previous shell traces which will prove who did the shelling, as the two sides' ordnance is distinguishable; all of this might just be grounds on which the West can pivot - can say 'wait a minute, we didn't want any of this' and go against Zelensky and his regime? Just maybe.
