  1. Putin's ambition has never been to take the whole of Ukraine. He is a pragmatist and knows what a guerrilla quagmire that would be - just like the Soviet's Afghanistan experience; and the US's Afghanistan experience. This is indeed about 'security guarantees', but those of the Russian Federation - a point that seems to be beyond the comprehension of the western MSM.
