@HPNana- Ukrainians are dying and suffering everything else they're suffering because of Westerners like you pushing our governments to send arms to Ukraine and encouraging them to fight for things (denying self-determination to the people of Crimea and the Donbass) that they have no hope of winning by fighting. Their president wants to be a movie star hero, so he's cooperating with you. If you cared about innocent lives you wouldn't cheer them on to sacrifice themselves (while you and your family remain on the sidelines) rather than compromising with Russia so they could live at peace.

@kieragard Do you think Zelensky hasn't jailed his challengers?

@rexsceleratorum1632 No, I wasn't referring to Yanukovych, however much of a Russian puppet he was. I was referring to Medvedchuk who was arrested by the current Western puppet government last year.

@karl7487 No, the point is simply that Russian democracy is about as legitimate as most places, certainly as Ukraine. There are very real issues with Russian democracy, but unless you're ready to throw away democracy altogether everywhere, you have to reject any changes to Russia that will come from anywhere outside of Russia.

@tessjuel Okay, under house arrest. Why is that difference significant to you? It's close enough for what I need to know/remember.

@watertrinemystic So are you going to Ukraine to fight?

@JCinerea Land grab? Hasn't Russia offered to withdraw from all the areas that were under Kiev's control prior to the invasion in exchange for Ukraine remaining independent and recognizing the right to self-determination of the people in Crimea and the Donbass?

@danielt.3152 Even the United States isn't united against Russia. A minority but still plenty of Americans recognize something of how corrupt our government is, how it misguided our foreign interventions are, the way our foreign interventions leave other countries wrecked, etc. And practically none of Russia's neighbors other than Europe are taking a real stand against Russia: China isn't, India isn't, Pakistan isn't, Iran isn't, Turkey isn't... We should be telling Ukrainians to quit sacrificing themselves and their country for the sake of forfeiting their independence to the EU and NATO. Even if Russia hadn't invaded Ukraine or made any threats to Ukraine, the Ukrainian people would still be better off choosing to do what Russia is now demanding Ukraine do.

@danielt.3152 It's about Ukraine denying freedom to the people of the Donbass and Crimea and about Ukraine's leaders selling the freedom of the people of Ukraine to the EU and NATO. That's about all it has to do with freedom and democracy. Of course, Russia certainly isn't a principled defender of freedom and democracy, but in this case Russia happens to have aligned with freedom.
1
@danielt.3152 Russia isn't making any claims to Kiev. Russia has offered to withdraw from around Kiev and most of the rest of Ukraine on the conditions that Ukraine remain independent and respect the self-determination of the people of Crimea and the Donbass. Zelensky himself recognized those clearly communicated terms and rejected them. What are you trying to pretend is at stake?

Aaron Katersky seems like such an awesome, old-fashioned journalist, simply reporting the facts as best he can.

@victorhopper6774 What's nonsense is the Western narrative that the war can be understood and explained by simply understanding that Putin is Hitler. If you want to actually think, refer back to my last comment.

@HPNana- If you care about the people suffering, you should support a negotiated peace, but that means compromise rather than the Ukrainian victory you've called for. And what would you consider a Ukrainian victory anyway? Taking Crimea back from Russia? Even if Ukraine had any hope of that kind of victory, which seems completely unrealistic, would it be worth all the suffering? If that's not included in your understanding of victory, what is included that Russia wouldn't be willing to concede now at the negotiating table? What justification does Zelensky have for refusing to compromise? Are all these lives worth "glory" for their flag and president?
