  2. The large "jumbo type" B747, DC10 and Lockheed L1011 all came about because the USAF wanted a wide bodied transporter. They settled on the C5 Galaxy but all the other US aircraft were designed and put together during the bid phase based on a lot of finance from the USAF. The B747 is still up there in numbers. This is one of the many cases of subsidies received by Boeing. Piss off Boeing!
