Absolutely correct - the court jester's behaviour reflected the nature of the king; making them perhaps the single most important member of a royal court in the eyes of any well versed observer. If the Jester's jokes and antics included even the king in humorous banter and were unimpeded and honest - the King was a just ruler with a sense of humor. If the Jester was hushed and hesitant then it showed that the King was a tyrant and the poor fool was stepping on eggshells, lest they wound up stepping up to lose their head.
