  1. They WERE nailed through their palms. How did they get around the weight issue? Simple, they used to bound the arms with ropes.

  2. Crucifixion was used as execution and as a deterrent, that is true. However they also used a lesser form to humiliate; much like how the stocks were used. No nails would be used and the condemned after being whipped would be bound for a few hours to a day or two before being let down - the punishment complete. Execution via the use of nails and the breaking of legs/spear, were mostly used for war criminals or those who committed more heinous crimes or when the leaders just wanted to illustrate a point.
