  1. Two points - first of all, Rommel was made to choose whether to commit suicide and have his family spared, or be let free at the cost of his family's lives. He chose the former for their sake. Second of all, the fact he was an idiot is telling, but the allies biggest mistake was allowing it to go as far as it did: for the first ten months of the war, Britain and France did...nothing. it wasn't until the Arden was traversed that things actually started moving and by then it was too late. France had the largest military at the time but they hadn't moved on since WWI and so technologically they were obsolete and in Britain, Chamberlain was a coward; choosing dishonour over war and ultimately got both in doing so. Had Chamberlain actually discovered his cajones and France actually gotten it's act together the war would have likely been over in a few months at most.
