In 2,653 days, asteroid Apophis that’s 1,250 feet across with a weight of sixty BILLION pounds is going to come about 18,000 miles from Earth at a speed of 45,000 miles per hour.
It’s never been photographed, it’s never been visited, it’s not tracked, it’s as dark as a charcoal briquette. It’s composition is unknown.
Politicians have deemed it non threatening. The B612 foundation has started that public opinion should be regulated. Religious institutions have already begun cashing in. Soon insurance agency’s will do the same.
It’s not fully understood how an asteroid reacts to deflection strategies. Apophis currently should not impact therefor any attempt could turn a potential natural disaster into a man made disaster.
It’s a wait and hope situation. Unfortunately as it currently stands we won’t know till three days prior to impact.
It was discovered in 2004.
It was stated that:
Public opinion should be well regulated.
That a mission to a benign asteroid should be undertaken to understand how asteroids react.
That it should be tracked constantly.
All of those statements are in the works.
If it impacts in the ocean, depending on the depth of where it impacts a tsunami wave 7,920 feet would come ashore, fallowed 50 seconds later by another 7,920 foot wave.
If it impacts on land it would have the force of 1,200 MEGATONS of TNT.
The estimated cost of a deflection mission is $500,000,000
It’s been decided to “Sit tight and assess”
