  2. Thanks Leo! To be honest, OneDrive "scares" me. At 79, not tech savvy and having tried it once, I found it to be more than I wanted and controlling to me. So the question, can I basically do the same thing with a little SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD or similar unit setting on my computer? If so, where doing I find info on how to sync it like I would with OneDrive? As always, thanks for the useful and inspiring information. JimE PS: Yes, I realize that have the "backup" right next to the computer does not supply the same benefits as having it off sight.

  6. Leo - What does a scammer really "look" like or are they all different?? Some 13 year old setting in a dark closet in their parents basement and wearing a black hoodie? A group of people setting in a large room and all working on the same individual simultaneously? Someone over seas who just purchased a list of personal info off the dark web and now has to translate it to get started on scamming folks? Someone who works for a company like Google, a bank or other business and is trying to scam their clients? Family or relatives? Is there any commonality scammers have other than to steal other folks stuff? JimE

  8. How true Leo. But, at 80 years old, I many times long for the good ole days when we all had time to stop and smell the roses. Like going through the Sears Catalog, ordering something and then waiting in anticipation for 7-10 days for it to arrive. Or instead of watching that movie or video on my phone I would hop on my bike and go to the local theater and for 12 cents watch a Gene Autry or Roy Rogers movie............... in black and white. I could go on forever. Today's world has gotten so small and is sometimes so instantaneous we don't have time to enjoy it or work for it. JimE

  39. How timely Leo. SSD! My laptop is five years old, can not be updated to Win11(per MS) and I have been thinking about replacing it. My only reservation is the hard drive in todays laptops. I am 80, like to use the KISS theory and do not use cloud storage and most laptops today come with very small hard drives. I prefer to be "self contained" so to speak. So the question is, what are the alternatives? Do I buy one with a small hard drive and then go through the expense of having someone replace it and I now have a useless small SSD and possible warranty violation? Can I just use one externally? Advice/Solutions??? As always, thanks for sharing the great information. JimE

Like I said previously, I grew up in an era with horse drive carts used to deliver milk door to door and TV's getting an intermittent black/white signal from a 40' antenna outside the house so I am not what I would call an electronic genius. That be said and reevaluating the question, I guess what I am asking is, can an external SSD completely replace the internal drive to a point where it could be removed? It didn't work for me like I was hoping. -The print screen key does not give me a notification on my screen. -I do not have a "screenshots" folder in my "pictures" folder. I currently do not use OneDrive -Did search for "screenshots" in "This PC" and get nothing. -Currently using Win10 ver 21H2(OS Build 19044.1889) -Using Google Chrome Version 104.0.5112.81 (Official Build) (64-bit) but I don't think that would matter. -The only thing I can do with it after hitting the "prtsc" button is go to Paint and paste it. It would really be useful if I could get it working as you described. Any advice? Thanks. JimE

At 77 I currently have a 17" laptop so I can see it.😁 My "needs" fall into where your wife's needs are but I am unwilling to spend $800 for that. Surely there must be PC laptops in the range of $400-500 that can be use for folks who just want to do email, surf the web, type letters and watch YouTube and don't do any gaming or editing. Perhaps you can shed some light on "Laptops for Simple Seniors" or "Simple Laptops for Seniors". Always enjoy your expertise and opinions. JimE

  49. Thanks Leo. The free version of Macrium Reflect will only do differential backups from what it tells me. So I do differential backups once a week. Keep in mind I use my computer for basically information and research so it is not a work tool. Been retired for 20 years. The question is, am I missing something by doing this? What I really need a backup for is my system, pictures, email and the like. Thanks. JimE

  61. At 81, I too enjoy what technology can/does to me and for me. Sometimes it is the only route to get the information needed or solve an issue. Where I really see that in action is with a visit to a doctor's office or medical facility. I then think back to "the way it use to be" and have to put a slight grin on my face. The frustrating part of technology comes from trying to solve a basic computer issuea. Like the last three days trying to figure out why YouTube videos would play but without sound. I would research and take enough stabs in the dark to correct it, only to find when I would boot up the next morning the issue had raised it's ugly head again.....and again. The big issues are, it takes sooooo much time and I don't speak the language. Therefore ,,,,,,,,,more research in a differnt direction. I can trully say that since I found Ask Leo years ago it has been at the top of my "where do I start" list. The main reason, the diolog is something I do not have to spend time translating, gets right to the point and to a point even I can understand.   62. I have that issue(sometimes) with on of my laptops. It starts to shutdown then comes to a blue screen telling me it has to do something first. The screen has a percentage up counter on it but when it gets to 100% it just stops. I have left it that way for hours but it goes nowhere. I have to do the push and hold on start button to get anywhere. As always, thanks for the info. JimE

After much agony I downloaded the free version of Macrium Reflect and proceeded to stumble through it with the help of YouTube. I did a complete backup and have it set to do weekly differential backups. Or, so I think. After watching today's info on testing, is there somewhere I can go to see how this procedure is done with Macrium Reflect. Sorry but at 77 this stuff just doesn't come easy to me.   73. Thanks for the clarification Leo. Question: Have you even done or thought of doing an episode on printing or can you give me direction where to find it? My reason for asking is, I get so frustrate sometimes on trying to print out information from a webpage only to find that it does not look like what I am seeing on the screen. The most aggravating thing is when information I need turns out to be just white space or a big white empty box covering other information that I need. Sometimes a page will just print out helter skelter with no rhyme or reason. I'm not sure if it is printer settings, page design or just the nature of the beast. The weird thing is, some pages that use to print out the way I expected, now have the look I described above. Thank you for your continuing effort to educated folks like myself. JimE

  112.  @askleonotenboom  Well, I read that and it was disappointing😊 and what I figured. That is the reason I don't usually get a new machine until one dies. I keep looking for a simple way to get a new machine to look and fell like the old one. At 77 I struggle getting a new machine up and running is a way that looks familiar to me and I usually loose things along the way. If only there were a way/program to get stuff from one machine to another like programs, files, file destinations, directories, email, bookmarks and the like to go the same place as a previous machine I would update machines more often. For me it just too much hassle and loosing stuff along the way gets me po'd. How is it that when you purchase a new computer from a brick and mortar store they offer, at a substantial charge, to transfer all of your information? Thanks for the continued help and information.   142. How ironic. I just did something similar an hour ago. I was starting a chat with a bank and it was rather lengthy so I opened up Word and did it there first and then pasted it in the chat form. I do this because sometimes in chat forms when I hit "Enter" to go to a new line it sends whatever I have typed and I am not finished typing. I fell I have more control over what I am doing. Also, for some unknown reason to me, sometimes when typing in a web form my typing will just disappear or do other unpredictable stuff. Thank for the reasons and clarification Leo. JimE

  172. Thanks for the info Leo. I guess, I'm right in the middle. I have tried to upgrade my 6 year old HP laptop and I keep getting told my i3-7100U CPU @ 2.40GHz is not on the list. So, I showed them, I went out and bought a new laptop with an Intel Core i7-1255U.😁 Still waiting on it though. Order it directly from HP. I ships out of China(☹😞☹) and is now setting at customs in Memphis, TN. Crossed the Pacific Ocean in one day and now it is going to take 8 days to go the final 411 miles. Unbelievable it couldn't have been assembled here in the US. JimE

  186. Leo, A couple of things. First I don't know where you get your ideas from for these videos on a daily basis but it's amazing how many are of interest and I learn something from them. Even at the age of 79 and not being tech savvy. Second, I did look at the apps on my machine and find it somewhat concerning. I'm sure there are many that slow my machine down but I don't have a clue where to start. There are so many Microsoft, HP and Intel apps and others that surely some could be removed to increase performance. Perhaps you could someday shed some light on general apps from any company that are just not needed but find their way to most computers. The same applies to startup items. Third, You mentioned going to a SSD which brings up two issues I could think of. 1 How does one get into the laptop to change it themselves and how do you get all of the info from the old to the new(backup?)?   203. Thanks Leo. I have been looking to replace my four year old laptop but most of them in my price range($400-600) have what I would consider small SSD's, 256/512 GB. If I get one with 1TB SSD the ram drops off and so the the processor speed of course. Would it be beneficial at that point to use an external drive like a Sandisk Extreme 1TB?   241. Thanks Leo. I had issues with logging in with my Microsoft account a couple of months ago. The issue was I could not get it to login automatically at startup no matter what I did after researching the issue. It would always stop and want me to enter a password. Annoying to me. I kept seeing solutions telling me to go to a screen and click login without a password but that screen would not show on my computer. I finally got it to work with a local account and no password but it is not like it use to be. I believe this all started right after a Win10 update. I really wish they would quit screwing with settings during updates. Can you have more than one local account? Thanks for the info. JimE

  260. First Ask Leo! rant I've seen in all the years I've been watching. Love it! I point out unreality to my wife all the time in the shows she watches. Kind of a touchy subject at times but it drives me nuts. I grew up in the northern midwest where I was brought up on hunting, fishing and around firearms and fishing poles all the time since the day I could hold one. This is where I really go over the top when I watch "cop shows" handle firearms. The news is the same way. I believe this comes from a lack of knowledge and a lack of desire to seek it and is driven by emotion and/or the desire to generate it. Great vid. JimE

  268. That took some of the confusion out of my dilemma. At 81, my wife and I share 1GB of data on Xfinity. Until two months ago, we have never used even half of it. For the last two months I have been getting dinged for going over and of course paying for more. Some of it comes from Apple updates and changes it makes to my phone I believe. I have since turned off cellular and the issue seems to have been abated. The only issue now is, when I leave the house I do not have a connection to the internet. Unless I turn cellular back on everytime I have a iPhone 14Pro working on IOS ver 18.1.1 and wondering if the "Auto-Join Hotspot" is something I should be using and what you were referring to.
