I am from Europe, and every time I hear Trump speak about immigrants, especially the ongoing dehumanization of them, my stomach turns in disgust. And then I think... America... it's your own fault that you let it get this far with your stupid laws. I can't imagine one second that a local politician could use that kind of rhetoric without legal consequences. On social media perhaps (although) but certainly not on a stage in front of thousands of people. Impossible, this would be all over the news and that politician's career is OVER. Even the sneaky dogwhistling with the fly would be a big topic in the news. If the US does not change it's laws on free speech you are giving yourself a free pass to destroy your entire democratic system from within. That makes me very pessimistic for the future because your first amendment is sacred how it is now. I never see that change without a ... civil war.

@yosemitegirlCA Yes because your laws allow this to happen. There is a difference between Europe and the USA when it comes to free speech. The USA advocates free speech in the form that everyone is allowed to say virtually anything they want. Correct when I'm wrong. Including telling lies and false information or insults about others, etc. You can even wave swastika flags without a problem. In all countries in Europe where I know the legal situation, there is freedom of speech, but not free speech. That means there are limits to what you can say. It is assumed that everyone has the right to be protected from slander, defamatory statements or insults. There are various laws that regulate this. In short... THE RIGHT OF THE INDIVIDUAL ENDS WHERE THE RIGHT OF THE OTHER PERSON BEGINS. t conveys the principle of respect for boundaries and mutual rights. It means that an individual's freedom to act or express themselves is valid up to the point where it infringes upon another person's rights. This is of course a problem on social media platforms. The EU also wants to curb conspiracy theories, propaganda, fake news and lies in order to preserve social peace. It is not about preventing open discussions, but about avoiding Russian disinformation and disruption, for example.
