Well unless you centralize and keep people on a short leash to make sure the "common good" gets prioritized, that kind of socialism will quickly dissipate into free-market capitalism... good example of this are the inevitable "black markets" which form under socialist regimes, which would become the status quo if there would be no totalitarian centralization.

  4. It was meant to be a critique of Stalin's USSR indeed... however Orwell was blinded by his own ideology, and didn't saw the simple fact that socialism will always lead to concentration and centralization of power, which will result in totalitarianism.

Not to mention, under a (free) Market economy, such centralization generally is not possible, unless that is exactly what the customers want. After all, corporations cannot magically conjure money from thin air (unlike a government)... they have to provide goods and services to people, and hope they are good enough so that people are willing to pay for those.
