  3. Carl talking about the state's primordial role as protector of property (39:20). I am reading "Inventing the Individual" by Larry Siedentop. Carl reckons without the family when putting forward his characterisation of the private society. The closest bonds are within the nuclear family for evolutionary reasons. It is not necessary to have the protection of the state in order to have property security. If you have a confident and secure family. And Zuby earlier declaring himself "not a liberal I am Christian" is unaware how revolutionary Christianity was as a founding principle of liberalism. Christianity invented the individual, the atomisation of a living man or woman independant of their family, its obligations and advantages. Read Luke 12:49-56, it points out explicitly that Christianity is there to deracinate people from their clan, their gens and their family.

  4. The difference between an African and a Black north American is the dissolution of the family structure by the process of slavery. While Nigeria was colonised by the British, the indigenous society was not dismantled. The Norman invasion establish the current English class system. To this day the ruling classes speak with a non regional accent. The aristocracy speak with an accent and vocabulary that was developed in isolation from peasant indigenous masses. It took the Normans 300 years to begin speaking English. To this day the English patrician classes utter French and Latin to signify they are not indigenous. It's infra dignatum to use Anglo Saxon expletives and des riguer to excuse your French. After all the Normans always spoke Norman French not the Burgundian dialect.

  5. Carl has a way to go yet. Conservatism is simply liberalism with the brakes on. There must be a backstop. Religion, a faith in an unquestionable authority, has to be adopted to prevent libertarianism and even internecine anarchy erupting. Carl hasn't got there yet.

  6. Zuby pondering why this is a Western phenomenon (1:40:30). This is a Western phenomenon because the West is founded on Christian principles. Most fundamentally, because Christianity sees as one of its stated aims the alienation its followers from their families. Read Luke 12:49-56. Buddhism and Hinduism are similarly dismissive of the family. Most religions however (Islam, Judaism for example) emphasise and reinforce the patriarchal family structure.
