Actually, if you looked at it objectively, throughout history "democracies" were just as brutal as suppressing people, if not more
Take Korea for example
The world has been conditioned to think of the north as the evil one, but it was actually the south that had summarily massacred millions of civilians suspected of being communist sympathisers
It's the same in Indonesia, the Communists weren't the murderous ones, the anti communist people were the ones who massacred communist sympathisers by the millions
Even in China it was the same, the right wing government was the one who fired the first shot, massacring hundreds of people with leftist leanings in Shanghai in 1927, forcing the communists to go overground and heralding the start of the Chinese civil war
At least in Asia, in the past 100 years or so, right wing governments were the ones committing mass killings, not the left
