@chongwang4339 It's still strange to hail someone with foreign citizenship as the pride of your country It makes sense to celebrate her success, because as you said she's also a Chinese citizen But to prop her up as the hero and pride of the country, it's really awkward, as it implies there are no one else in China who can fulfill that role

"She's a proud Chinese" Yet she can't even speak the language

@jamesreed7636 Yes, I find it really strange that she refuses to simply admit that she's given up her US citizenship But at the same time, how can she compete for China if China doesn't allow dual citizenship

@chongwang4339 Ok. I find it strange how people in China are treating her as their national pride Do they not know she's an American citizen?

@pollylu6733 Excerpt from FT: "Tags including Gu’s name took up seven of the top-10 trending spots on Weibo, the Chinese social media platform, where she has close to 2mn followers and was described as a “pride of China”."

@pollylu6733 Would you still be proud of her if she competed for team USA?
2
@pollylu6733 Exactly You'd still be proud of them, due to ethnicity But you know they have nothing to do with China It's the same reasoning here Eileen Gu has actually not much to do with China, besides her ethnicity She is in fact still an American citizen The point about being awkward is, calling Eileen Gu the pride of your country is as awkward as calling Michelle Kwan the pride of your country

@chongwang4339 If China doesn't allow dual citizenship, then why is she given special treatment?
