@HaggardPillockHD The politics isn't so much with the Mercato Projection itself - as pointed out it is a great tool for navigation The politics comes in when people choose to use the Mercato Projection as a representation of the world in general, aka as some sort of world map, in settings that do not have anything to do with navigation, ie classrooms

@HaggardPillockHD Of course there are political reasons Japan and Britain are both island nations located near the top of the map, yet only one of them is exaggerated in size Draw your own conclusion

@Chris-zv8xm Whoa calm down college student No one is saying that the problem is with the Mercato Projection itself As pointed out, the Mercato Projection is great for navigation, and that was the intended purpose for it The politics comes in when people choose to use the Mercato Projection as some kind of representation of what the world looks like, aka a "world map", in settings outside of navigation, such as classrooms, textbooks, TV screens, etc

@JohnSmith-dj2ml Wow you seem triggered Please explain why the Mercator Projection is still used in classrooms and textbooks and on TV, when Mercator himself clearly intended for it to be used by sailors
3
@JohnSmith-dj2ml LOL you are the one dodging the question why are people using a navigation map to represent the world when there are perfectly suitable alternatives
3
@JohnSmith-dj2ml LMAO that's not answering the question The question is why use Mercator Projection on TV, when it was clearly meant to be used by sailors for navigation
3
@JohnSmith-dj2ml LOL come on You keep repeating to me the reason why Mercator Projection is used to create navigation maps But you are in fact not answering why people choose to use it outside of navigation when they are other better alternatives
3
@JohnSmith-dj2ml There are other methods that preserve relative distance AND relative size of land masses, such as the sinusoidal projection, which Mercator himself used There literally aren't many reasons why anyone would want to use Mercator Projection for maps outside of sailors using it for navigation
3
@JohnSmith-dj2ml Like I've said three times now, no one is saying that the problem is with the Mercato Projection itself - it obviously has its uses in navigation The politics comes in when the Mercato Projection is used in settings unrelated to navigation, ie classrooms, textbooks, TV, etc, to represent the world, when there are perfectly reasonable alternatives
2
@JohnSmith-dj2ml Yes, short of using a globe, there will be some form of distortions But there are various other projection methods which preserves distance and yet do not distort land size, such as the aforementioned sinusoidal projection, and the Mollweide projection
2
@JohnSmith-dj2ml It's either intentional or unintentional If it's unintentional, then you're right, it's not political, it's just dumbassery If it's intentional, then I don't know why

@pablopumarestaminiau7512 So you're arguing laziness? Too lazy to use the correct map? Come on And not all classrooms have the luxury of having a globe, especially in poorer nation's like India, SEA, and etc But that's not the point The point is why use the Mercator projection, which was intended only for navigation, when there are many other projections available? This is the point that seems to be lost on most people in this comment section No one is arguing the usefulness of the Mercator projection, or why it existed in the first place The argument is why has it been accepted, and continued to be used, as the "standard" world map? It's literally a very poor rendition of what Earth's landmass look like
