  2. Music from the 50s and 60s often sounds objectively terrible technology-wise, which was a huge turnoff when i was a teen. When you are used to 'wall of sound', over dubs, and the lush reverbs of the 70s and beyond its hard to appreciate 'live' takes where it's all midrange and everything is bleeding into each other. Also, the highly distorted electric guitar was a new sound that was interesting and versatile. We haven't had that in quite some time. Arguably autotune?

  3. Kids now want a multimedia experience. Interactive at that, either via the content or social media. Music alone isn't enough, that's just the soundtrack to something cool. I suspect reading books has taken a hit too.

  6. Ever have your least favorite track on an album become your favorite a decade+ later and eventually despise the 'radio song'? That isn't going to happen anymore because I'll just skip to the next 'banger'. Most kids these days would skip pink floyd tunes before the intro was done.

  8. I work in the industry as engineer, i can write an MLC parser if you need one ;) We literally have entire teams who's only job is to identify the song and artist being claimed. Not if they get paid, how much, when or even how; just properly identifying you and your track. Remember, the exact same sound recording can appear on multiple works over time (greatest hits, compilation, movie soundtrack, etc), that have different rights owners at different points in time. Thats completely ignoring performers, which is distinct from rights owners. Also keep in mind that if it is 'on demand' or not actually matters. Non-interactive digital, i.e. Sirrius/Pandora charges differently than youtube or spotify. And that's the 'easy' short version, once you go international it gets extra stupid.

  10. A few hundred years ago collective experiences were rarely larger than your local community. Everyone didn't grow up with the same mass produced/distributed songs, toys, food, etc.

  11. For you 60+ guys, how does the 'nostalgia' of songs from your 40s compare to your 20s? Am I still going to be mostly listening to music from the 1900s in 2050?

  12. Depends on when you were young. I feel like ~91 was better personally but i think we can all agree the mid 80s were a low point between the late 70s and early 90s.
