"opportunity first and the pay will follow". I have 20 years of software dev experience that says this is complete bullshit. If the pay isn't there, its not an opportunity. They will gladly pay you in 'atta boys' and kudos if you let them. And when you finally call their bullshit, there will be another sucker working for promises. Free Beer Tomorrow!

Gotta love overly specific reqs written by a helpless HR department or clueless recruiter. "Have you ever painted a house red?" "I've painted dozens of houses, but not red specifically" "Sorry, we're looking for people with at least 5 years experience painting houses red."

@limelight81 I make a decent salary precisely because I didn't fall for that trap. I've seen it happen plenty enough to know to warn others. Knowing the market and when you're being taken advantage of is just as, if not more, important than actual skills if you care about your salary.

The US rewards competitiveness. For example, average software engineer salary in the US is $120k with a ~30% tax rate. France is $60k with a ~50% tax rate. That's why we answer emails at the grocery store.

@comdo831 Yes, but we provide all the tools needed. I was born into poverty (food stamps, free school lunch, etc). I took out some student loans (and paid them back!), went to state university and am now well above median income. Zero resources, zero connections. Do something stupid like have kids or run up a bunch of debt? Gonna have a bad time.

They don't pay enough to keep up w/market value, but you're the loser for 'job hopping'? You dodged a bullet.

@FrozenMonkeyG If you're an unskilled laborer, this is wonderful. Otherwise, not so much. There's a reason the US gets most of the top talent in the world.

Exactly. When you get 2x the pay, expect about half the time off.

Promises are the currency of the desperate. Don't fall for it, they are almost certainly paying everyone in promises.

It's hilarious to watch the post genx crowd light up the comments, unironically reinforcing exactly why they aren't hired.

@ You can literally google the difference. No anecdotes needed.

If I don't get the job, I don't care which person that didn't earn it did.

Capital One does this and it's a complete nightmare (but you aren't allowed to call it forced rank). Why help your team when it's a competitive advantage not to? You just have to give the illusion of helping while gifting white elephants. Politics > merit.

@YeshuaKingMessiah If you can't afford them, yes.

No matter your vocation, politicking is your most valuable skill. You don't have to like it.
