The part you're missing is there was far less opportunity to do better than that back then so it was better for the 'peasants'. We now have a ton of professional gigs that pay what only doctors, lawyers and architects made. The downside is, if you aren't willing to earn those gigs it's a step down from the old days. Keep in mind a house was < 1k sq feet and the only luxuries you had were tv and radio.

At one point delivering a pizza required knowing the town, a cashier had to make change, etc. Now a 15 year old w/no experience does it just as well. You are straight up less valuable than years ago.

  32. The alternative is to train that employee who then leaves for a better offer now that they have skills. Why should the company take that risk? You take your skill with you, giving you a much greater incentive to attain them over your career. More pragmatically, if the people you are competing against are bringing that to the table and you aren't, the outcome is pretty obvious.

The disparity is because the value of a 'peasant' is lower than ever due to the investments of the rich. 20 years ago even delivering a pizza required knowing the city, cashiers had to do math, factory jobs were dangerous, etc. Thats going to increase supply and lower compensation. It's really that simple. I'd agree, if the only thing you bring is unskilled labor then that gap is pretty large. Learn to weld, code, etc and suddenly things ain't so bad.

  38. The reality is that entry level labor has never been less valuable due to the investments of the rich. You use GPS to deliver a pizza, the PoS makes change for you, the kid at the hardware store is just going to google, etc. When an untrained HS student off the street can do 90% of your job, you lose bargaining power. It really is that simple. The fact we have self-checkouts, everything is disposable, etc is just salt in the wound.

  46. If we look at 'top' CEOs making top dollar, they really do have a 1000% impact compared to decades ago, if not more. They used to affect their local economy, or maybe even the 'tri-state area', but are now at a global scale for almost everything. My ISP went from someone tacking up some coax on existing telephone poles in the 90s to literal space programs. Is that not worth a few extra bucks? Do you really think those 'greedy' shareholders want to pay the 'greedy' CEOs that much? Why do you suppose they do it? Why aren't companies with low paid CEOs usurping the markets w/their competitive advantage of paying the workers more? Be honest. At the same time, entry level has never been safer or easier i.e. less valuable; cashiers can't even make change anymore and you can deliver food w/o knowing the language of your locale, never mind the geography. You are genuinely less valuable to the company precisely due to their investments in productivity. They will get that RoI, not you.
