  2. The alternative is to train that employee who then leaves for a better offer now that they have skills. Why should the company take that risk? You take your skill with you, giving you a much greater incentive to attain them over your career. More pragmatically, if the people you are competing against are bringing that to the table and you aren't, the outcome is pretty obvious.
