  3.  @ryanviningtube  unfortunately a lot of Chinese culture were created by top-down state directives even the concept of mandate of heaven was originally created by the emperor to justify his own rule only after a couple hundred years when that dynasty fell, did the concept get picked up by regular people, and used to explain "oh the mandate must have passed onto someone else" etc

  6. i dont think any of the Draconian solutions ever actually worked in chinese history... examples that come to mind were basically all failures: 1) great leap forward, 2) great wall (didn't stop the mongols or manchus), 3) grand canal - led to the rebellion that ended the Sui Dynasty, 4) forced unification of China - Qin dynasty only lasted 20 years before getting overthrown etc the only successes in Chinese history were situations where the government let loose - e.g. 1980s reform, 1920s of relative peace and free trade etc...
