  1. It is more complex than what you see here. Best example was right after 9/11 half the congress people started showing up with boxes of stuff they said needed to be purchased immediately. It just so happened this gear was usually produced in their district by campaign donors. At first whole batches of this crap got purchased and shipped in to both Afghanistan and Iraq. Most of it was of dubious value. Then the formed a team to review this stuff to see if anyone even wanted it, and then shortly after that if it even had half a chance at functioning. In the meantime this gear was sent in to theater and was often just stuffed into Connexs to get it out if the way. We were always impressed when corporate guys back home trumpeted the gear they built, funded, and shipped over and was supposedly winning the war for us. Only we knew it filled multiple connexes never to be used. Always wondered what became of half of it as we left MANY connexes in place when we left.

  2.  @notfinn1583  The Law of Land Warfare does not provide special carve out for insurgents or "Resistance" fighters. All combatants are expected to safely evacuate civilians from the battle area they control to prevent civilian casualties. Over the 24 years I was in uniform I observed several occasions where the US and its allies rehearsed this as what we titled Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations (NEO). The Isrealis already did this by evacuating approximately 100,000 civilians from the north of their country to provide safety for them. Hezzbollah is expected to do the same. But they qont because to them civilians are just unexpended propaganda ammunition.

  4. My experience is that it is not the experience IN Iraq and Afghanistan that puts parents off from encouraging their children to join. Rather it is largely the post conflict results that discourages them. Both Iraq and Afghanistan suffered from the post fall of Saigon syndrome. I first put on a uniform in 1982 and MIGHT not have joined during a second Carter administration. Giving up on South Vietnam coupled with Desert One was NOT a great advertising point. Today, no one in uniform trusts the current administration to use the military to do anything like fight an actual war. But we do expect to see a steady drumbeat of woke policies enacted by weak leaders. You want to fight for that?

  8. Most civilians cannot fathom the amount of support and training to keep a bird flying. The crews doing maintenance on the birds have usually years of experience. The Ukrainians don't have the training base to do it.

  11. The problem was that Shinseki had no knowledge of history. If he had any knowledge he would understand that the BCT focused concept had been tried by the US Army once before when it was called "The Pentomic Army". The same problems we knew would resurface in the BCT focused army was that low density MOSs training level would degrade as they were all sprinkled amongst the Brigades. We are still recovering the lost children from the Brigades and moving them back to divisions.... And I remember the laughter from the other services in Hawaii when we were forced to gather in the PACOM parking lot for our official "donning of the beret" ceremony. Humiliating....

  14. Beards? Weed? New PT? New food? Okay we adopt those and get maybe 300 more soldiers who are on the edge. It does not solve the key problem of trust in the administration and the Army. This current problem reminds me of the US Army during the Carter years. He made the largest pay increase in Army history but also caused for people to run for the exits with the Desert One debacle. No one trusted him that they were valued and appreciated. Also hurt that his side of the aisle was also the creeps who spit on returning Vietnam vets (and threw a pan of dirty slush on me in my class a uniform) Return the army to its core mission of fighting and winning our nations wars and trust will return. It took the Reagan administration and its policies to return respect for the military. Bring in someone who can separate the military from the social experimentation morass and say we will only use it in aupport of the needs of the American people.. And the sons and daughters of current and former soldiers will come back to the fold.

  15. Concur.. Under the Law of Land Warfare the Hezzies are required to evacuate the civilian personnel from the urban area before they use it for military purposes.

  16.  @General_Ward  No, I disagree. The IDF followed the LoLW and evacuated something like 100,000 civilians to safety as part of a NEO operation to insure their safety. The Hezzies refuse to evacuate their civilian personnel because to them a civilian is like an unexpended round of propaganda ammunition. Civilian casualties are the point of Hezzy operations. That is the violation.

  17. One of our key problems is Acquisition officers must acquire something using their budget or their career ends. Simply solving the problem with new TTPs does not spend the budget and their world ends if an approprited line item is not exhausted. We are starting to go into end of fiscal year freak out about now. Don't let them catch you with money on the books....
