We always imputed competence to the soviets. Those of us got to see them up close and personally recognized that it was all designed as a bluff. Their training was abysmal then, and only slightly better now.

@altergreenhorn Yeah, but mostly it was fear generated by an unknown. The Sov's staged so many large scale maneuvers that were so highly rehearsed and filmed snippets of them. One in particular I remember was them using tanks to snorkle under a river to cross it. Impressive video. Later we learned the actual event was an abysmal failure in which they had to pave a portion of a river and set it up for total success. And in the event they still lost tank crews as they flooded and drowned.

@Alik_Odess i got to watch the sov's during the 80s. They suffered the same ills we now see in Ukraine. There is a big push to put rose colored glasses on regarding the soviets military process from the 70s and 80s, but they always were polished tanks on parade, but terrible maintenance.in the actual combat units. Horrid leadership below captain level.
