@mpkid5 Note it did not burn. The damage is what we call a mobility kill. WHen the vehicle is recovered it will likely take time and hard work to replace damaged track and likely a bogey wheel or maybe a final drive. But I am certain that the ammo did not cook off. Hey, at least American Tanks and IFV dont hold the world record for highest turret throw....

@JonMartinYXD the only American i am familiar with who died from a sub munition detonation in theater was spinning it over his head on a lark when the act of spinning it by its "flag" caused it to arm and detonate. I can recall no incidence when dpicm or other submunitions impacted near us troops.

@catsnads01 don't forget the Space Shuttle ...

@JonMartinYXD it is easily morally defensible when you take into account the expected atrocities from the obviously immoral communist dictatorships that would sweep into position without their use. I have often heard leftists decry the ROK and US deployment of landmines in the DMZ, but we slept better knowing that the nK would have to go through them to get to us at Camp Bonifas in the JSA. Likewise we knew that the SOVs tanks crossing the Hahn River would have to cross on floating ferries under the quintessential steel rain of DPICM and that their approaches to the crossing points would be slowed by having to deal with FASCAM. I guess it comes down to which you would rather be seeing, 1.) lines of enemies of the state as in policemen, teachers, and professors being led to a ditch to be machine gunned and bull dozed. Or... 2.) Eod teams spending years removing unexploded ordnance and teaching the locals what not to pick up. Me? Thats easy. About a 1/4 of the year I work in a facility that has a permanently dudded impact area, old hat to me.....
3
@JonMartinYXD dangerous? Hell, C4 is dangerous. Being in the turret of an M2 Bradley is dangerous. Driving a gamma goat is dangerous. Helicopters are inherently dangerous. I ave been told the flight deck of an aircraft carrier is dangerous. Night movement in tactical conditions is Dangerous. We live in a dangerous world all by itself. What is your real complaint?
3
@JonMartinYXD jon Martin. Did the germans clean up the uxo from the blitz? The italians from.the abysinnian war? More recently have the Palestinians, hezzies, and hammys cleaned up the rocket damage to the Israelis towns they have been impacting?
3
@JonMartinYXD what is the long term damage of an occupying government who is willing to murder thousands in locations such as the Katyn Massacre? You have the luxury of not having to think about that on your well groomed campus.....
3
@angelmario7085 no, these were likely the infantrymen trained by the US in Germany this winter

@sincitycapital Funny you should mention the movie. I was in the original Operational test as a soldier/Player of the M2. NOTHING depicting LTC Burton in the movie is recognizable to me. We detested that flight suit wearing bozo. What the movie does not depict is that the Army determined a need to counter the Soviet BMP1 which had shown value in the middle eastern war of 1973 and it was obvious the M113 was not a realistic counter. As test players I recall being asked if we liked the Bradley and all of us who had transitioned over from M113 said we loved it. The Bradley admirably countered the BMP and did so in operations I was part of during Desert Strom. We ate BMP's for breakfast and had an occasional snack of a BTR.

@user-ye2dk4ty9i what technique do you refer to that the Sovs can copy? Not treating their troops as spam in a can?
3
@michaelficarro2591 I was depending on dpicm to save my life if the Sovs attacked west Germany in the 80's. Sooo many tanks and we were going to destroy them at the choke points using dpicm and seal entrances to such things as minefield lanes with fascam. For some reason some people seem to have the luxury of worrying about landmines. I did not have that luxury there or in Korea because I needed them to live to this old age.....
2
@EastCoastJeepSRT and the dod spent great deal of effort working the friendly fire issue at asciet in the 90's to solve the problems. Did a pretty good job too. .
2
@JonMartinYXD right. So as stated before the Pallys are out with brooms and mops taking care of the unexploded rockets in sderot?
2
@mh-ht2fp Hey, if you got it, use it. By the way, those desert patrols I was on provided plenty of dead bodies of soldiers equally as well trained and motivated (NOT!) as the Sov's currently trying to hold the line in Eastern Ukraine.
2
@snakethepeg7828 I disagree, the dpicm is not the prime weapon for this, you only impact the surface targets out in uncovered spaces. The better weapon to get those hidden in the houses would be the use of unitary munitions with HE delay fuses to get the enemy in the cellars. Dpicm is used to stop enemy tanks at choke points as the forward (bridge entrances etc).

I would assume the Bradley that hit the mine and lost its track is recoverable. It did not burn. Intersting to note the crew did not have to carry anyone, the drivers hatch opened, so the most likely injured crewman was still able to move. I counted 7 crewmen move away from the vehicle. Unknown how many were on board when it hit. The crew was obviously rattled. But able to plan their own cover and extraction with smoke. No sign of indirect or even direct fire used against them so it might be assumed the minefield was not covered by fire. My estimate is that vehicle will be recovered and back in working order within 2 weeks.
2
@orionlt1028 seven personnel essentially walked away, none carried. Total of ten seats on board. But I gotta say I never had all my seats full on my M2 either....
2
@tomk3732 hard to say other than the BMP is shorter, tighter, and closer to the treads. I saw plenty of BMP series in Desert Storm, no spacial lamination and you are closer to the ground . Would prefer to be in M2 when the mine goes off....

@sincitycapital My NTC Rotations were in 1985, 1986, and 1988. No cameras capable to do it then. Sun to note the Dust bowl in 1985 was simply a stretch of desert with a line of engineer tape on it to place the head of your shelter half tent against to create a line of GP tinys. No showers, no sun shade, no buildings of any type. in 1986 we had a shower tent provided by corps on the last night prior to flying out. By 1988 we had sunshades and a shower building, but that was it. I was back in 2004 and it had turned all the troops into Fobbits with lots of stress reducing tents and buildings with AC.

@JonMartinYXD my quick research shows undetermined land mines killed most....
1
@JonMartinYXD but were they effective on the targets they were employed against. In my experience they were.....
1
@snakethepeg7828 only in mesko esai....
1
Bill, do you have the LUXURY of not using them?
1
@kittytrail if they don't burn, they can....
1
@3o3tigger Richard Dunnigan in the book "how to make war" states the key truism that ownership of the battlefield after the fight is key in modern war because the winning side owns the equipment to repair. To soon to know if Either Ukraine or Russia will hold this particular chunk of ground.
1
@ThirthyDollarPants not what we have seen so far. How many breaches were attempted in this vicinity?
1
@tomk3732 not much change between bmp1 and bmp2 other than the replacent of the low velocity 73mm cannon with the high velocity chain gun. Bmp 3 is more akin to a m113 with turret . But even it is too low slung for survivability against a mine.
1
@sincitycapital i liked it. Did what I needed to do
1
@sincitycapital Yeah, back in the 80's they allowed a PX truck to pull up a couple days before we went into the box, and then again the day after we returned to the dust bowl. We all came back from the NTC looking like refugees. on the Tower Air 747s. We did not notice the smell, but the aircrews surely did. Many of my troops were greeted at the door to their quarters with a hose and a garbage can by their wives. The old Vietnam Vintage Jungle uniforms we wore went straight into t he garbage and they got a a good hosing off before they were allowed in the house. I was assigned to the NTC in 2004 and things were much softer. I only had to go into the box twice, and lived in the BOQ's. No maneuver training at all. All road clearance procedures from FOBs that were located in places I had battled through in the 80's.
1
@sincitycapital THe OC's told me it started WAY before Fort Irwin became the NTC. So, maybe even 1940 when it was a headquarters of the desert training center for General Patton.

@user-ye2dk4ty9i Yeah? THese the ame engineers who made the engine blades on the MIG-25 out of untempered steel? Every time it took off to chase the Blackbird it destroyed yet another set of engines for NO return on the investment. I will give you mighty Soviet Engineers some big hints. 1.) Try not treating the guys in the BMP's as cattle on the way to a slaughter house. Perhaps put a decent set of EO/IR sensors on it instead of just the sov crap you did. 2.) The autoloader on modern sov tanks is CRIMINAL. Perhaps invest in the crew and have a loader rather than a powder keg for your three man crew to sit on. 3.) It also helps to not have graft ridden plutocrats in charge of the development of the systems. If your guy building your cheap tanks has a 300 foot long yacht, your crews GONNA DIE. THos three hints will do well for you. But it just is not in keeping with Sov culture.

Ciaran Butterly lot of hard work by citizens built that first world nation. Sadly being pushed back down the scale by the progressives.....
1
@marcwittkowski5146 "POP SMOKE!"
1
@industrialman8296 Sure, say that now. W were not allowed to use it in training because it smoked out the live fire ranges and was considered a safety hazard to safe training. We did see demonstrations however and it is about as good as it gets.
1
Artillery dpicm for the US was designed to penetrate thin armor roofing and destroy SOV tanks. Pretty effective at it
