  30. When I lived in Mexico it was hard to find clothes in general, but the ones sold in local stores were expensive and often poor quality. (I think I bought a new skirt at Coppel once, probably on sale.) Used clothes from the US were very popular because they were much more affordable and considered to be better quality. I bet nowadays the used clothing in Mexico market has taken a bit of a downturn considering all the bad quality clothing that's being sold in the US.

  36. What amazes me is we have to sign paperwork that we are responsible for all costs, yet there's no way to know those costs ahead of time. Once I was billed for going to the ER and one of the doctors wasn't "in network". So I figured, sure, I'll pay the bill, if my health insurance gives me a list of doctors at the hospital in network, so I can ask each doctor what network they are before they treat me. Ended up appealing the bill to the state, who made the health insurance pay it. Stupid me, should have left it at that, but I asked the state person why it was that the health insurance didn't cover it, and he felt I was disrespecting him and ungrateful for his help. That was a few years ago. Just this week, different health insurance now, my husband got approved for an eye exam, ordered by his doctor because he has diabetes. We were surprised he was approved, since we don't have vision coverage. I called the health insurance, who said they don't have any approval on record. The health insurance called the medical group's referral department, who says it must have been automatically approved, and now they're reviewing it. So if we wouldn't have looked into it, we could have been on the hook for hundreds of dollars for a vision exam, even though it was "approved".

I'm surprised you don't consider tacos healthy enough to eat regularly, but I know we're all different and have different health. I lived in Mexico so I've heard of a lot of things, not that I've tried many of them, though, and the last thing you mentioned, Tasajo, I hadn't heard of. I don't know much about Oaxacan food. I did visit the city of Oaxaca once a few decades ago. I loved the chocolate shops, a friend and I bought a little bag of warm chocolate and ate it with little spoons in Monte Alban. I hope to go back one day with my husband.

Besides driving that fast in a residential area, he was putting his kid's life at risk. I don't see how the police did anything wrong in this case. It's too bad the dad exposed his kid to that.

  334. When we lived in Mexico we couldn't afford more than basic vet care, like medicine and sometimes IVs if the dog was really sick. We would have just had to let the dogs die. They ended up dying kind of young, about 8 years old. Dogs don't last long in Mexico. It's a factor here in the US, we're not able to afford pets.

  406. Yes, I think we have to accept our discomfort with other people's differences. I have felt uncomfortable looking into people's eyes when one eye is "off", is it ok to ask how to look at them? Or is the eye that's looking at you the correct one for everyone? I feel like I'm leaving out the other eye. I would compare this type of situation to how to look at someone in a wheelchair or who is very obese. Do we not look at them so they're not stared at, or do we acknowledge them when normally we probably wouldn't? I think too many tv shows in the 80's/90's showed women going into labor and screaming, and that really scared me. I admire women that have children, and it amazes me that everyone that exists came into being that way. All that said, in my late 20's I was asked to be with Spanish speaking friends that were going to give birth in the hospital and needed me to translate. So I was there for a C-section, and there for a natural birth, (that one was tough), but it almost made me think maybe I could do it. I think it was wise of this mom to let her daughter be there since she wanted to be, so she could have that knowledge and experience.

The most important thing for student success is reading. Read anything, and read to your kids even as teens. Read in your maternal language. Of course, the car shouldn't have been towed as it was (on the back wheels), and just for that she should be compensated for repairs. But I don't think it's wrong that she couldn't get in the car if it wasn't registered to her. (Of course, there should be a way her brother can authorize her to get her things, but imagine if anyone says, "Oh that's really my car, can I get some things out of it?") Why is the date and time of when the tow was ordered and when it was towed different, that's another can of worms that is revealed, but in my opinion on scant information, doesn't really affect what happened to her.

So the next day, after we realized what had happened and after the police came, we figured we had a chance of finding the culprit because at 2 am the only people using our street instead of the main street are people that live in the area and know it's a shortcut. To make a long story short, we found the truck and two guys hiding in a church parking lot (up a hill, behind buildings) waiting for a tow truck. Called the police and told them we found the truck, they were amazed. Police didn't do anything about it being a hit and run, and I guess they couldn't do anything about the probable DUI. But at least his insurance paid the damages. We bought our neighbor a pie.

SDCoastkeeper has some more detailed information about what the sewage consists of. "Every year, billions of gallons of toxic pollution flow across the U.S./Mexico border down the Tijuana River, bringing untreated sewage, hazardous industrial chemicals and trash into the Tijuana Estuary and Pacific Ocean." When it rains, it causes the treatment plants to be overburdened so that the sewage doesn't get treated. But even though it hasn't rained much recently, there is a lot of untreated sewage being released because the treatment plants are not working. It's a very complex issue.

  879. Love the idea of stuffing it with spinach and cheese! It never occurred to me to make meatloaf in a bigger pan; I always use a bread pan. I use %90 beef and don't add any fat, seems to work. Also just use ketchup, mustard and brown sugar for the sauce, but I put it on at the beginning. I like the idea of using spaghetti sauce and 2/3 way through.

  911. Most used clothes get donated to thrift stores, "poor" people can buy them there. I get most of my clothes there because the price is right. So thrift stores then get rid of the clothes no one buys, people buy big lots of clothes for cheap. Here in San Diego a lot of those clothes go south into Mexico. Goodwill has an outlet right on the border by the Otay crossing. A lot of people in poorer counties rely on those clothes. I used to live in Mexico and I'd buy the used clothes from the US because they fit me better and were cheaper than new Mexican clothes. I had the hardest time finding shoes down there, new or used, since one of my feet grew to a size 11, almost started wearing men's shoes.

  949. I've been trying to learn Chinese for a while now, but it is hard. I just can't get the tones, can't remember them. I did recognize a lot (a lot for me, anyway) of Chinese words in the subtitles, though. Didn't really understand the speaking. I learned Spanish as a second language, and it is really cool to be able to talk to people and surprise them sometimes.

  966. When I didn't have health insurance a few decades ago, I would go to Tijuana to buy my asthma inhalers. I also did asthma studies and would get free inhalers. It's horrible that he couldn't get his medicine, it really is too expensive. I don't think it's the pharmacy's fault, though. None of them are affordable. Perhaps his doctor should have made him aware of the pricing and alternatives. We've had doctors give us a heads up on pricing. Even with insurance, my preventive inhaler costs $25/month, which I feel is a bit high.

  980. I raised a few before the pandemic. I learned that we're supposed to try to use native milkweed, because it dies back in the fall. Also, I often ran out of milkweed and was calling nurseries and spending a lot of money trying to feed all the caterpillars I had. We learned to cover the milkweed plants in a big screen cage and only uncover it for a short period of time to let just a few eggs be deposited, and then cover those plants in mesh cages so flies can't lay their eggs on the caterpillars. It's really rewarding to release the butterflies, though!
