  13. Excellent summary and vindicated that you touched on the Spanish language issue a tad. You though are remiss in not mentioning that doing business in Mexico or being a person of known wealth, and increases the odds of kidnap for ransom. I have been told by an attorney connected to the cartels, that for example owners of gas stations are targeted. Latin America is okay for stealth businessman and for retirees, but not entirely okay for the wealthy unless they are going through the hassle of maintaining a security detail. I am not saying the odds of kidnap are extremely high, but the risk is there and you are remiss in not mentioning it. High net work individuals would be more secure in East (south or north) Asia or Dubai where kidnap crime is very low. Kidnap for ransom is a reason Puerto Rico is not advisable as well. My understanding is that Uruguay requires one to be married to apply for citizenship. In the USA, we can carry a weapon which is not the case in Latin America, where Castle Doctrine is not allowed at all (if your attacker uses a knife you must also defend with a knife not a gun). Uruguay or Portugal may be the best approximations of the best of the United States, although NO other country can really match the desirable superlatives of for example California in every way. For example, Malaysia might provide suburban space, but sucks for climate and Asian attitudes are banal. And this is your huge blind spot Andrew, that you simply are not American the way I am (United States) American. No other place in the world can be (the United States) America, sorry. You like being mix breed European-Asian or something. I do not. Perhaps because it appears you are Scandinavian by descent which is really a different breed than a UK/French Anglo-Saxon. Note I do not dislike you. You are articulate, intelligent and I respect your opinion. My lateral ancestor Isaac Shelby found in the Revolutionary War. I am a warrior type, you are not. Bona fide founding stock Americans are warriors. At least for now, Europeans are not taxed as non-tax residents, the way U.S. Corporate citizens are (although there is an easy fix which is correct one's birth status to American State National). Note not that I wouldn't love to visit for example the Swiss Alps. Mexico is an excellent plan B for many north Americans. Hits most of the needs, and close enough that one doesn't need to entirely ditch the USA as the plan A option.
