  1. I live in the Philippines. It's true, you won't get a clone of the West here. If you want everything exactly like the West, you won't get it in most places. Stay in the West. I just returned from Manila and there are some really, really nice places there for less than in the US. Bonifacio Global City is like any big Western city, but cleaner and better organized. More expensive too, but not as much as the US. If you do your due diligence, you can get a good deal. Don't expect US homes on the other side of the planet. The construction here can work well if you are careful, hire good people, and stay on top of them. Yeah, many people will try to overcharge you if you are a Westerner. They figure you have deep pockets and can afford it. It is a fact of life here and most places where expats live. Don't like it, then don't expatriate. On the flip side, you can do whatever the hell you want on your property without some zoning commission or HOA being up your butt. Consumer protection is nowhere near as strong here. You MUST do your own diligence. Also, the artist conception here is not required to look anything like the finished product. Do NOT pay for someplace that hasn't been built yet, unless you are personally hiring and supervising the construction crew. American infrastructure is far better. No argument. If you cannot do without it, don't come here. There are regular electrical brownouts here and water outages. So we get a generator and solar + have a well dug ... all of which are far cheaper than than in the US. Hot water is not a given here. Most of the locals don't need or want it. It's only for us spoiled Westerners. Tankless water heaters for the shower here are cheap and easy to install. You don't need house heating here at all. And who needs a washing machine where you can pay someone to do all your laundry for the month for $10? I'm on my 3rd rental here and finally have something close to what I had in the US. I am in a very nice 3BR, 2 Bath with AC, gated community with pool, hot water and internet for $725/mo. Five minutes from the beach. $650/mo in America for a nice place? Not since 1990. The going rate for 2 BR place where I lived in podunk AZ was almost $2000/mo.
