My parents were European immigrants. I was born 2 years after they arrived. There was no affirmative action for them. Nothing printed in their language. They had to take a test in English to get their citizenship. My father also did hard, manual labor at below minimum wage. I did hard manual labor as well starting at age 15. I didn't speak English when I started school. I learned. Fast. I realized from a very early age that I had to work my butt off if I wanted anything. I paid for 100% of both my bachelors and masters. Both degrees in an employable hard science, not some woke pseudo-degree. I served in the military for 27 years and also managed to craft a successful civilian career afterwards. I never collected unemployment or any kind of public assistance. I never declared bankruptcy or failed to pay taxes. Now, suddenly, I am the problem because I am a white man.

@aojorel That's messed up. My son is half-Latin and he runs into that a lot.

@🏳️🌈⃠ Resist The State, Abolish Democracy Assumption without data? I doubt you could pronounce my original name. After decades of repeating and spelling it for people who only know one language (English), I changed it to something all the monoglots could handle.

@🏳️🌈⃠ Resist The State, Abolish Democracy I hear ya. That's one of the reasons I changed my name to Jeremy. It's kind of unreasonable to expect people in the country where you choose to live to be able to pronounce your foreign name. That an my mother inexplicably bestowed a very weird foreign name upon me, even in that language. It's much better just to have people understand my name the first time instead of the inevitable, "What? Can you repeat that? Can you spell that?"

@Dahlen4Dummies FAFSA did not work out for me, but I used the GI Bill for part of my CS masters, paying the rest with a combination of scholarships and work. Bachelors in engineering was a full scholarship at West Point.

@🏳️🌈⃠ Resist The State, Abolish Democracy It just made more sense. Why slam my head into the wall repeatedly. If I want something from a larger group, it seemed to make sense to adopt their way of communicating. I know there are varying views on that out there.

@🏳️🌈⃠ Resist The State, Abolish Democracy I would guess you're a lot younger than me. Many of my years in between were spent wallowing around and wasting time. Don't lose hope, you can do it. Just find something that both pays the bills and that you enjoy. Fortunately, that is still possible.

@🏳️🌈⃠ Resist The State, Abolish Democracy Thanks man, I appreciate it. I try not to come across as an a$$h0le with my comments, but more often than not I fail.

@zapatavive1801 Well I'm guessing it was directed at me then. Interesting since my ancestors didn't set foot in North American until 1959, and the Austrian corporal was performing genocide on my race just 20 years prior to that in Europe. But hey, don't let my facts get in the way of your emotions.
