  1. I became ill due to compromised immune system due to months of long and late hours of work to try to stabilize a website that was messed up by an incompetent contractor. My doctor recommended several months away from work to recover. I asked for, and was granted, three months of Short Term Disability ... which the company loudly touted as one of its benefits. Two weeks into it, my employer stopped paying me, citing some vague insurance requirement. When I tried returned to work so I would get a paycheck, both HR and my boss told me I could not do so because I was on short term disability. I waited out the remainder of the three months and then gave my notice the day I returned. I worked remote, so it was by email. Neither my boss, my director or HR even bothered to respond. I just got the COBRA notice in the mail a few weeks later. They didn't fire me ... they just stopped paying me and wouldn't let me come back.

  2. I suffered poor health because of extended long hours and stress due to dealing with the effects of a narcissistic contractor over a period of years, as well as a gaslighting boss. I applied for medical leave, which was granted, but HR conducted a "required" investigation into the cause of workplace effect on my health. I was astute enough not to mention my boss at all, just the contractor. They stopped my paycheck 2 weeks into the 3-month paid medical leave, citing some insurance reason. Their "unlimited" time off policy also had a loop hole in the fine print that maxed at 2 weeks. When I tried to return to work so I could get paid, they said I could not because I needed to be medically cleared first ... for a condition they denied. I quickly noticed that nobody in any leadership position would talk to me anymore or return emails. The narcissist contractor meanwhile, had received another 30K contract. I saw the writing on the wall and made other arrangements during my medical leave. I resigned on the day I was scheduled to return. My boss, my director, my HR rep ... none of them even acknowledged my resignation. I just received the COBRA letter in the mail 2 weeks later. My former company is Christian-based and loudly touts its godly purpose and values. A classic example of why so many people become atheist. I totally get it that a company is in business to make money, not to support employees. However, it is highly hypocritical for those same companies to exhort values like "family," "community," and "team" when they only use them as manipulative tools to get more out of employees without intending to abide by anything embodied in those concepts. You owe your employer NOTHING.

  3.  @braniganrobertsonlaw  Thanks! It’s ok. I’m in a far better place now. It’s not often one gets a chance to cut several toxic people out of their life at once. Yes, the money hurt, but it was worth the cost in the end.
