  1. Aviation accounts for just 2.5% of global CO₂ emissions (and still just 4% if you take account of the supporting industries). That's globally, meaning UK's contribution is even lower. Everyone harps on about aviation, but most CO₂ emissions are from other consumer activities. Taking ICE cars, lorries, busses, etc. off the roads will have a much bigger impact. The newest modern airliners are highly efficient, not only do they carry more passengers/cargo, but the engines are the most fuel efficient engines ever, and they run on the greener aviation fuels.

  2. I'm happy for Labour to try unproven strategies and think outside of the establishment box. I think Richard is overlooking that Net Zero is not just about one or two technologies (CCS, nuclear). It's also about emerging technologies (greener fuels, more efficient power consumption), and change in consumer habits (driven by global policies). Most UK homes now have insulation, insulating the rest won't make a huge impact. Solar panels are worth doing but it's still expensive and the payback can take up to a decade by which time many people may have moved home, and so they don't see it as worthwhile.
