The USA is similar to Australia in that it also is as a federation of states and as such had no name originally, the country of Australia took the name from the continent just like how the USA or the union of states in America, took the name of the continent as well, united states Of America. The USA technically still has no name as United States is just a description of the states being in a union, very generic description, so to people living in the USA, Americans or America is just a much better options then a meaningless description like "United States" as many countries in the world are a union of states so the US is basically nameless and just a description of a bunch of states working together. America is the real "name" in the USA and just like Australia taken from the continent's name. By chance America is also a continent of other counties so a bit confusing and unfortunately some people look negatively at Americans using the name America but it is only as the country is a union of states so has no other name. It would have been nice if the USA had chosen a name but that would have probably just lead to arguments and disagreements so no name was chosen. So America it is :)
