  1. You can't stand in formation and throw a 7 foot spear that's just not going to happen so I think there is a lot of missing information. You can even see depictions of a single solders running with a spear so that is not even in formation at all. Who knows, there could be a confusion of later Greek cultures about those that pre dated them perhaps?
