Richard Nixon through that a Capitalist, free market and global trade leader would make China a peaceful developed country like the rest of SE Asia and by all account the CCP played along fairly until the CCP changed direction. I think it is hard to know for certain what happened that made them change course but the moment the CCP picked Xi as their next leader the writing was on the wall. He has been aggressive and war mongering from the moment he took office, not like the CCP was not doing so before Xi but the level and extent is on a totally different scale. The banners, slogans, re-education, it's like a new Soviet union formed, I bet even Russia is not happy with the change, look at how the CCP was caught spying on Russia. At this point it is now up to the world to choose to take the risk and hope the CCP changes direction by some hopefully internal power struggle or more realistically remove all investment in China and roll back the clock to send the CCP down the path of the Soviet union.
