  1. To me it looks like the 18 wheeler made it off just fine before the impact. I see no traffic at all during the collapse except for the DOT vehicles with flashing orange lights.. Keep in mind only the metal part that overhangs the shipping lane collapsed the rest of the bridge on both sides is fine and standing right now, you can go and watch the recent daylight helicopter view. The only vehicles I see that fell with the bridge are the DOT cars that's it.

The DOT shutting down traffic saved lives for sure, during the collapse the only vehicles I See that fell are the DOT vehicles so the 18 wheeler cleared off the hanging span over the shipping lane and on to the concrete pile section which is standing just fine right now. You can go and watch the live helicopter videos in daylight and see only the metal hanging structure fell the rest is standing. The 2 other crossing points over the bay are under water tunnels which might be the best option to just go underground
